BUFFALO, NY (October 29, 2012) --- Buffalo Bandits General Manager Steve Dietrich today announced that the Bandits have agreed to terms on a one-year deal with defenseman Derek Suddons, pending league approval.
“Derek is a great defender, but he’s very underrated when it comes to the transition part of his game,” Dietrich said. “Most importantly, he’s a solid, team-first guy that brings a lot of character to this team and someone that our younger players can look up to as they build through the year.
Suddons (6'1", 205 lbs. 6/10/78) is an 11-year NLL veteran who has spent time with Columbus, Toronto and Edmonton. In 2012, Suddons set a career high with six goals as a member of the Rush, adding six assists and 50 loose balls in 16 regular season games. He appeared in the 2012 NLL All-Star Game in Buffalo, notching three assists in the 20-18 win for the West Division.
“I’m very privileged and excited to have the opportunity to play for the Bandits,” Suddons said. “The fans in Buffalo are loud and passionate and the atmosphere there is amazing. There are some familiar faces on the team and I look forward to being a part of a successful season in 2013.”
In 171 career regular season games, Suddons has totaled 77 points (16+61), 655 loose balls and 93 penalty minutes. He has added five points (1+4), 29 loose balls and 12 penalty minutes in 10 career postseason games.
The Bandits also announced that they have agreed to terms on one-year contracts with 2012 draft picks Hayden Smith (13th overall) and Carter Bender (18th overall).
Smith (6'0", 192 lbs., 1/18/91), drafted by the Bandits for his aggressive, hard-nosed defending, used his defensive skills to help the Orangeville Northmen to a Minto Cup championship in 2012. Bender (6'3", 205 lbs., 4/5/89) ranked third on the Brampton Major Excelsiors with 25 points (10+15) in 11 games last season, also appearing in one contest for the Rochester Rattlers of MLL.
