City of St. Catharines (Press Release)
Mike Accursi, teacher, athlete, coach and mentor, has been selected to carry the Olympic Flame and light the community celebration cauldron when the Olympic torch relay comes to St. Catharines.
"I am thrilled to have this opportunity," said Accursi. "I've always believed in the goals of the Olympics and to be chosen, not only to carry the torch but to also represent my community in this unique way, is an honour."
The Olympic Torch Relay will visit St. Catharines on Dec. 20, stopping for a mid-day community celebration in Downtown. As host of the celebration, the Community Task Force, the group charged with planning the event, is asked to nominate the person who will carry the torch on stage at the celebration and light the temporary cauldron.
"Certainly selecting one person from St. Catharines was difficult given the number of community-minded individuals who call the Garden City home," says Kimberly Hundertmark, chair of the Community Task Force. "We really wanted someone who not only embodies the Olympic spirit and follows their dreams, but also someone who inspires others to follow theirs. The committee agreed Mike more than met these criteria."
Mr. Accursi is a Senior Success teacher at Holy Cross secondary school, working with students who have difficulty achieving success in a traditional classroom setting. In addition he is also the head coach of the boy's lacrosse team, the assistant coach of the girl's hockey team, and co-chair of the Holy Cross Eco Action Team.
Outside of school, Mr. Accursi is the Assistant Captain of the Buffalo Bandits lacrosse team, assistant coach of the Jr. "A"nAthletics lacrosse team and Co-ordinator of the Lacrosse program for Olympia Sports Camp.
Mr. Accursi is married with a boy and twin daughters and is a graduate of Brock University.
Mr. Accursi will be Co-Marshal of the Grand Parade on Sept. 26 as part of the Niagara Wine Festival. This year’s theme for the parade is Embrace your Olympic Spirit.
